Why brokers have a vital role in today’s health insurance market

Statistics released by the NHS in June 2018, reveal that patients are having to wait over six weeks for one of fifteen key diagnostic tests, which is the highest level since April 2008. It is no surprise that factors like this are contributing to a rise in individuals taking out private medical insurance.

If you are considering purchasing health insurance, like any future investment you need to do your research. When starting your search, look closely at where you are comparing quotes.

It’s important to remember that your health insurance should be tailored to fit your needs and budget. Each insurer has their own benefits and although it can seem like the most familiar option to go to an insurer directly, this may not actually be the smartest decision.

By going direct to the insurer, you will only receive information and advice on their own insurance products, which may not be the best available option in the market for you.

Comparison sites can be great for getting a benchmark price, but they can’t give you a bespoke quote. Although it may appear they are operating on a whole market review basis, this is not always the case. Some sites will also have in place partnerships with individual insurers and will therefore, be more likely to promote a policy with that insurer, regardless of whether this provides you with the best cover.

Insurance brokers can play a vital part in finding you the best health insurance. Unlike insurers and comparison sites, they don’t just provide you with information about insurance policies but are responsible for the advice they give you.

Your broker will work by assessing your needs and identify what is important to you with regards to cover. They will then use their knowledge of the health insurance market, to negotiate competitive premiums on your behalf.

Dan Parker, Director of Switch Health, explains: “As a leading independent advisory broker, we are always striving to educate people about how to invest in the best health insurance cover.

Our insurance specialists receive thorough training, which gives them the confidence and knowledge to be able to offer expert advice.

When deciding to use a broker do check that they are fully accredited by the Financial Conduct Authority, as this will give you the peace of mind that any advice you receive they are liable for.

Your adviser should also explain whether they are:

  • Independent
  • Advisory or Non-Advisory
  • Advising on a range of insurers; or a representative of one insurer.

Unlike Switch Health some brokers do charge a fee, but this must be disclosed upfront.”

Your health insurance should be tailored around your needs, which is why it is not as straight forward as comparing other types of insurance. If are looking for a personal approach and a clear understanding of your cover, an independent insurance broker will allow you to do this.
